Many landowner journeys begin when a whānau member passes away and their land interests or shares in an incorporation are transferred to their whānau members. Some people become landowners when land is gifted or transferred to them.

Succession is the legal transfer of land interests or shares from a person who has passed away (the deceased) to their descendants. In most cases, this will be from a parent or grandparent or someone you’re related to by blood.

Some people become landowners when a whānau member transfers land to them by gift or sale. The Maori Land Court will ‘vest’ the land interest by way of a vesting order. This occurs most commonly between close whānau members.
